Many books teach children how to utilize positive coping mechanisms to deal with challenging feelings. However, I think “How To Tame My Anxiety Monster” stands out among the pile of other useful resources available because it reads like a children’s story instead of a self-help book, which is more likely to keep young listeners or readers entertained and engaged.I also like that the author chose not to tell the story in rhyme. By sticking with short sentences and simple words in easy-to-understand language, children will find the content more relatable.Likewise, the author did an outstanding job describing anxiety in both words and illustrations. It was a genius idea to use a “monster” as a visual aid to represent anxiety. It turned a vague notion of a feeling into a real nemesis for the main character to battle with and eventually tame.My favorite part of the whole story and an important message that I hope everyone who reads this book will take to heart is the following sentence:“I am stronger than my monster. Even with him around, I can still do all the things I need to do.”Anxiety can be managed & controlled even if it never goes away, and I appreciate that the author shows children how they can still have a fun and happy life even with a monster sidekick by their side.
